NCAA RULES FOR COLLEGE ATHLETES
If a student wants to participate and play a sport during his freshman year of college at a Division I or Division II college, he/she must meet these requirements commonly known as Proposition 48 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Athletes who are interested in competing at the college level are encouraged to discuss the many regulations with their coach and/or school counselor. Booklets detailing other NCAA regulations are available in the Counseling Office or by writing: The NCAA Clearinghouse-Forms Processing, P.O. BOX 4044. Iowa City, IA 52243-4043 or at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.
CURRENT REQUIREMENTS:
DIVISION I – The core curriculum of at least 13 academic courses must include at least four years in English, two in math, two in social science, two in natural or physical science, one additional course in English, math, or natural or physical science, and two years in additional academic courses
DIVISION II - The core curriculum includes three years in English, two in math, two in social science, two in natural or physical science, two additional courses in English, math, or natural or physical science, and two additional academic courses.

Computer science courses will no longer be able to be used for initialeligibility purposes beginning August 1, 2005. The new requirements also include a revision in the Division I

The NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse requires prospective college athletes to register on-line at
www.ncaa.org. By registering on-line, prospects will be able to view their eligibility information on-line, and will
not have to call the clearinghouse for eligibility updates. On-line registration saves time, and allows prospective
student-athletes to view their eligibility status up to six weeks faster than through the paper registration process.
Students must apply through the NCAA Clearinghouse no earlier than the end of their junior year. At that time,
see the Counselor for forms and instructions. All sports do not have the same restrictions and dates. Students
who have met most of the requirements for core courses, test scores (on SAT, ACT, PSAT, or PLAN), and grade
average may make recruiting trips. See Athletic Director, Counselor or Principal for details. All requirements for
eligibility at Division I colleges must be completed by the graduation date of a student’s class. All requirements
apply only to the freshman year in college or an NAIA college does not have to meet these requirements UNLESS
they plan to attend a Division I or II college later. Such students could lose a year of eligibility if they have not
qualified for Proposition 48.
