Alumni Spotlight: From China Spring to College Football's Biggest Stage

Public schools play a vital role in preparing students for success beyond graduation. One China Spring ISD graduate is now putting those lessons to work on college football's biggest stage. Bella Galvan, a 2018 graduate of China Spring High School, serves as an assistant athletic trainer for the University of Miami football team and will be on the sidelines as the Hurricanes compete in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday, January 19, 2026.

China Spring ISD recently connected with Galvan to reflect on her time as a Cougar, the path that led her to Division 1 athletics, and the advice she has for current students preparing for life after high school.

What year did you graduate from China Spring High School?
I graduated from China Spring High School in 2018.

Where did you attend college, and what degrees and certifications have you earned along the way?
I received my Bachelor's of Science in Health Education and Promotion from Oklahoma State University in 2022. Upon graduation, I attended The University of Tulsa and earned my Master's of Athletic Training degree in 2024. I currently hold an athletic training state license in Florida (LAT) and a national board certification which allows me to work as a certified athletic trainer (ATC). I also hold several other certifications, gained through continuing education courses, that have advanced my skills as an athletic trainer.

How did your experiences at China Spring influence your career path and help prepare you for your current role?
My time at China Spring High School laid a strong foundation for my career path. Participating in athletics, performing arts, and student organizations at China Spring helped me become a better student. Balancing involvement in organizations and classes at China Spring helped prepare me for the workload of athletic training.

What does it mean to you to be part of a University of Miami football team that has secured a spot in the National Championship?
It has been an unforgettable experience to work for this team. I am very fortunate to work alongside so many great individuals who have all helped the team reach this point. We as a staff put in tremendous time and effort year-round to get to this point. It is very rewarding to see the season end with a spot in the National Championship game. I am very lucky to have the support of my friends and family all season; ending with a National Championship in Miami is very special.

What are some of the responsibilities that come with your role in the athletic training team, especially during a high-profile season like this one?
Our responsibilities as a staff remain the same throughout the season regardless of game outcomes. Preparation for the next season begins shortly after one season ends. We help facilitate rehab and treatment for injuries year-round. An in-season day typically consists of morning rehab and practice prep, followed by practice, then more treatment for injured athletes. A normal day for the athletic training staff also includes illness assessments, injury evaluations, rehab planning, game/travel preparations, and various appointments for the athletes. The athletes rely on us to provide care for all aspects of wellness, which makes the job incredibly unique.

Looking back, are there any teachers, coaches, or mentors from China Spring who had a lasting impact on you?
I am very fortunate to have had a great support system while at China Spring. Several faculty members, past and present, still reach out to send words of encouragement my way. Dr. Rutherford, Coach Josh Gregory, Cody Corntassel, and Mrs. Cindy Davis have always been supportive of my journey to get where I am. Teachers such as Mrs. Julie Smith and Dr. Emblem offered more difficult classes and helped better prepare me for what was to come in college and graduate school.

What advice would you give current China Spring students as they begin thinking about their future goals and career paths?
My advice to current China Spring students would be to take the leap of faith when pursuing future endeavors. I would never have imagined upon graduation that this would be my path. A lot has changed in the seven years since graduation, and I couldn't be more thankful for the opportunities that this journey has afforded me. After finishing school, I took a huge leap of faith and moved 1,300 miles from home and everything turned out even better than I could have imagined.
