China Spring ISD Board of Trustees: May Meeting Summary

The China Spring ISD School Board met on Monday, May 19, 2025 at 6:00 pm. The School Board highlighted May Faculty and Staff Award winners, heard from foreign exchange students, learned about growing success in Career and Technical Education and voted on School Board officer positions.

Each month, faculty and staff are recognized for their outstanding contribution to the students at China Spring ISD. These educators are nominated by their campus principals and confirmed by the administration team. Educators are recognized at the School Board meeting and presented with a plaque. Foreign exchange students from Germany and Brazil spoke to the Board about their time at China Spring ISD. Phoebe, from Germany, shared that she originally wanted to go to California or Florida but was glad she came to China Spring. She said she had the best host family and loved “all the American things,” especially the food. She said riding the yellow school bus, joining sports, and making friends with teachers and classmates made the experience special. Julia, a student from Brazil, spoke about how much she enjoyed her first snow day and the Homecoming traditions. She said she was thankful for the students and teachers who made her year unforgettable.

Assistant Principal Kandace Beckham gave an update on the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. China Spring students earned 0 industry-based certifications (IBCs) in 2022–23, but that number has grown to 97 this year. Next year, the district has a goal of topping 100.

Executive Director of Special Programs Dr. Nick Smith announced that the district will host its first Special Olympics banquet. Students will be honored with a certificate and a patch for their letter jacket. Dr. Smith also shared that the district’s 18+ program currently supports two students as they continue to work on their functional and IEP goals after graduation. China Spring hopes to grow the program by learning from Midway ISD’s “Empower” program.

Superintendent Dr. Marc Faulkner discussed the potential impact of House Bill 2. While the bill includes $4.2 million for teacher compensation and more than $1 billion in other needed areas like special education and early learning, the funding still leaves many employees out. About 200 staff members, including instructional aides, hourly workers and secretaries, will not receive raises under the current bill. Without additional revenue, the district may continue to face a budget shortfall next year. Dr. Faulkner said the district will explore all options, including a VATRE, before considering cuts.

In May every year after the school trustee election the Board of Trustees must elect new officers for the upcoming year. The Board voted to keep all current officer positions. For the 2025-26 academic year, Rick Hines will serve as president, Jeff Bradburn as Vice President and Holly Dunham as secretary. This year China Spring ISD did not hold a school trustee election due to all candidates running unopposed.
